1997年8月31日，戴安娜·弗兰西斯·斯宾塞王妃在法国巴黎因车祸而去世。这个消息震动了艾尔顿·约翰，计划师范思哲也同样逝世于变乱。
同一年掉掉落两位好友，这让他一度烦闷，终极艾尔顿·约翰决定用歌声纪念，于是创作了《Candle in the Wind 1997》这首歌。1997年9月，该首歌的录制在伦敦西部的Townhouse录音室实现 。
